[SCS Blog] SCS on the Road

SCS Blog

Recommended Posts

The life of a game developer is not all just about basking in the glow of a computer screen. We need to get out too - to perform "business networking" - and it's especially true in case of SCS Software, as we need to establish and maintain contacts not just within the games industry, but also in the huge universe of transportation and logistics.

You may have noticed a recent blogpost with a short photo report by a small band of SCS developers visiting IAA Commercial Vehicles 2016. Trade fairs are an amazing opportunity for us to have conversations with the companies in transportation industry, to establish new contacts, as well as take a ton of photos as inspiration and reference for future development.

The IAA tradefair is taking place in several huge halls of Hannover Messe, each the size of a football field, and all around and between them. We have reserved two days to explore the expo, but still we have not managed to see it all. We have created a short movie with impressions from our IAA visit, to give you a sample of what it is like, though we cannot claim it to be exhaustive nor representative of all important stuff that was there to be seen. We were happy too see a lot of supporters of our truck games there, it was also great to see our game technology used in a 4-screen technology demonstrator by TrailerVue.

We hope that by the next IAA event, our ties with the industry will be even closer, and thanks to establishing new cooperation, there will be a lot more to be seen in the games and perhaps even on the show floor.

Only a few days later, a bunch of SCS guys were already sitting on a plane to Seattle, to visit Steam Dev Days. Valve's Steam platform is of critical importance for our business. With over a hundred million users there it is helping us reach new customers and grow our fan community. Equally important is their robust network infrastructure and easy game updating system, and support of "branches" that we use for our various betas. It allows us to experiment, gives us more room to grow, and we can focus on developing and expanding our games rather than struggle with their maintenance.

It was a great pleasure to see our American Truck Simulator logo on Valve's presentation slide recognizing games released in 2016 that succeeded thanks to being able to engage their fan community.

Talking about traveling the world and trade fairs... our fans in Poland, and we know that there is a lot of them, are invited to visit the upcoming Poznań Game Arena trade fair, taking place October 21 - 23. Our games will be there, and you will have a chance to play them and even get a peek into what's next, as this will be the first chance to play our upcoming Vive La France DLC expansion for Euro Truck Simulator 2! The add-on will be kindly presented there by our publishing partner IMGN.PRO, and even supported by a couple of SCS Software's very own Poland-born employees. Come see the add-on in Hall 7, booth 65!

There is nothing like free advertising unless you are supporting Mp Devs in making ETS2 what it is today,ETS2 would have died long ago if it was not for the MP Team.

And please talk to the team promods as they have made ETS2 allot better

@antrax 737,

Hiring more people to "look more professional" wouldn't make a difference.

Copyright issues take a lot of back and forth between the legal teams of the parties involved.

Unfortunately, copyright is the main issue for a slow release sometimes. Then again, most of the time it's a case of quality over quantity. I mean, would you rather a free/paid DLC every month and have it contain lower quality content, or have the best quality DLC every so often?

Personally, I feel that the time between DLCs can be a little long at times, but they're definitely worth the wait.

@Glanshon

They are worth the wait now that we have multiplayer, i would stop playing ets2 if there would be no mp, even now that we have mp my real life friends are leaving the game, so it might be worth the wait for only some of us you know... by hiring 20 more people i ment that, that way they could become more important in gaming industry and that would probably open some new posibilities

@antrax 737,

I can understand where you're coming from, but the size of a game studio doesn't reflect how important they are or necessarily open/close any possibilities :P

It's mainly down to budget, the teams motivation as well as the project itself.

However, getting back on topic, it's always great to see what the devs get up to :D

in my opinion, ETS2 would have lived whether MP came along or not, yes third party mods do help cement a games life by expanding on the base developments, but gamers these days are spoilt. when I started gaming 13 years ago, games rarely, if at all, got updated by their developers, what you bought on release day was what you played till they released a follow up title a year, 2 years later. then with the updating systems coming into affect, gamers have now taken it at liberty that updates will come thinck and fast and complain when things out of the developers control slows production. ETS2 was extremely successful in the 2 years before MP had its first versions come on the scene.

@Jack122 if they would decide to hire another 20 people they would look more profesional (big company stuff) and that would make things easier and they could do that.

the number of staff you have in a development company has little to no affect on the speed of which legal processes, Copyrights and all the other legal red tapes require countless weeks of to and fro action till a decision is made, in fact, in the trucking world, it takes longer because trucks haven't really been a huge factor inj games up and till recent years, so the industry doesn't know what to make of a games company wanting their licenses and copyrights in order to make recreations of that companies vehicles, if it was a car sim, it would be 10x as fast as it is for SCS now because cars have been in games for decades so licensing is a much faster process. But also take into account that not only do truck models require licenses, trailers, cities, companies etc etc, pretty much anything in the game world will require a license before its given to the public, which slows production to a crawl for ages really.

All in all really, I can see ETS2 running for a few more years with the possibility of another follow up title after that depending on how much of Europe is covered in the game before the plug is pulled. The next few years should see revamps of the existing map that was a part of the original base game in 2012 which looks severely dated now compared to Scandinavia DLCs layout.

@megadethsteve666By that you probably mean, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, England, Poland, Slovakia, Czech rep. Hungary, Austria and Italy?

You think they will make ets3? Or...? If so you think they will use existing map or they will build game from 0?

im more talking about the areas that you have to pass along this road to get to from the south or England, so places like Duisburg, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Hannover, Kassel and more further east cities, Italy, france and such you can avoid using this road by simply heading through france first instead of going east then south.

On the subject of ETS3? it depends on how much more of Europe they get to create in ETS2 before profits drop off and its no longer sensible to keep the game alive with expensive new content. The likelihood is that ETS3, if its made, would follow the path that SCS took when developing ETS2, take the original map from the last title, tweak it a little and then publish the game, then expand and rebuild the map as seen fit, its a lot more profitable and less time consuming than having to completely rebuild the entire map as well as keep other projects running at the same time.
