      The controller allows for a far more precise control over the car, especially when you need to spin in the air. The analog stick gives you freedom to choose how much you want to turn and that allows for many maneuvers that in most cases, are essential for playing well. The keyboard and mouse combo can be used to play, but since their input is digital rather than analog, like a controller's, you cannot have as much control. If you press a key to spin in the air, for example, you either go all the way or you don't go at all, unlike with the controller. This may not sound as bad, but it really is. It hurts your gameplay and ability to do things a lot. I've played RL with keyboard and mouse for about two weeks after I got it and I immediately noticed the difference in gameplay soon as I got a controller. The difference between keyboard+mouse and controller is rather alarming. Play with keyboard+mouse is fine, but if you want to get any decent/good at the game, a controller is definitely a must-have.
