Chat Translation as an option

Suggestion Name: Optional chat translation

Suggestion Description: Pretty much as described on the tin - would require setting a default language in TMP settings or scraping for that data from the host PC (if possible). Solutions for a translation API could be based on LibreTranslate (https://libretranslate.com/) as it is free, open source, and could be hosted on the same servers that manage chat & game data

Why should it be added?: I believe this is a feature that would be desirable to many users across the world and would help with making the worldwide community feel more connected as TMP has users from all over the world. I know this has been suggested here before as well as suggested myself in the DIscord #patrons-suggestions which recommend that I post it here.  I think this future would be a worthwhile addition to the community and deserves reconsideration by the TMP team. Below are embedded posts of previous requests showing that this has been something that people have wanted for a good amount of time now.

I only know English. Makes it hard to communicate with the community where there is no option to understand what they are saying.

I like your suggestion Even if they speak their native language we can still know what they are saying  which is convenient for chatting and can help many people

For me good idea, I speak Czech and English

When i dont want translate eng to czech, i am using automatic translator in Chrome (right click to web and then translate to czech)

As they mentioned, it's almost impossible to implement. However, they could consider other translation services if it's financially feasible.

And if implementing it for all languages is too difficult, they could at least support just Turkish and Chinese those seem to be the most common non-English languages used (at least that's what I see the most). If supporting just a few languages should be easier to implement.

I think it's a really good idea. It would be great if players who can't speak English could still understand it. But it could be really difficult to implement because it would require a lot of resources. But in my opinion, it would definitely be worth it

Until recently you could simply copy+paste chat into a translator of your choice. Since the recent update that is no longer possible for whatever reason. Not sure why.

That's why I brought up libretranslate, it's free open source self-hosted Google translate. The only part would be getting the chat APIs to communicate with the Libretranslate APIs

Yeah, atleast, TMP should implement a one-way translation feature so that most English-speaking players can understand what others are saying. Even if the other person doesn't know English and can't respond properly, it still helps to see what they’re saying.
Especially if it’s important or even offensive.
 

With one-way translation (from other languages to English), we could at least understand the context of conversations instead of just seeing some jumbled letters. Full two-way translation would be ideal for proper communication, but even one-way would be a big improvement in helping players understand each other better.

Hey KaliWolf, 

 

Really like this idea – definitely think it’d be a solid addition to TMP. Not everyone’s multilingual, and it can be a bit of a barrier when you’re trying to have a bit of a chat on the road with someone who speaks a completely different language. Having optional chat translation would make a huge difference and help more people feel included.

 

The fact that the community’s so international is one of the best parts of TMP, and something like this would just bring everyone a bit closer together. LibreTranslate sounds like a decent option too – open source, can be self-hosted, and fits nicely with how TMP handles things already.

 

Appreciate you digging up the older suggestions as well – shows this has been on people’s minds for a while now and definitely deserves another look from the devs.

 

Fingers crossed this might come to fruition soon.

I think that’s a good idea. It would simplify many things, especially communication between players or between players and game moderators. An automatic translation feature would also be useful, as well as the ability to report insults in Turkish or similar languages in the chat.

 

There are posts from 2018/2019 where they possibly didn’t yet have the necessary tools, etc. Since AI is going to become more powerful in the coming years, I see this as a great opportunity for TruckersMP to evolve in that direction

The in-game chat should and must be translated from all languages into English. It is really annoying when you can't tell what is written in chat.

Then, access to the chat should be limited to English only and the CB can be left multi linguistical, thus mandatory to be ON.

What's the benefit of that?

I think optional chat translation would be a great addition, since it would make it much easier for players from different countries to understand each other without needing outside tools. It would help during convoys and events where clear communication matters, and at the same time bring the community closer together. Since it’s optional, those who prefer the original chat could keep it, while others would benefit from smoother interactions in-game.

just allow users to select text in chat, copy it, (it used to work) and translate it that way. Currently, most accessible option that is most easily implemented. Unless there's an easier way?
