Overtaking on 2 lane roads

Seasons

Recommended Posts

hello Savage if you are overtaking while a trucking is in the oncomming lane that could be cause for a ban. You can overtake in a road that does not have double lines. Also it is not recommended to overtake a convoy as you may not be able to cut back in if a truck is coming.

^^ Actually there is a guide on how to properly overtake in the "In-game rules" thread.

This is a very simple how-to guide on how to overtake (and be overtaken) properly.

The first thing you should be aware of is DESYNC. Basically, what you see on your screen is not always what the other players are seeing. This might cause (unintentional) ramming in many situations. To counter that effect, here's some practical information that you should always follow.

When overtaking

- Start your overtaking maneuver when you are at least 60m from the truck in front of you (you can always check the distances using the <TAB> key).
- Stay in line
- When you checked that the other driver is 100m behind you, you can start merging back.
- Alternatively, if you see the other driver turn its lights on, or hear him honk 2 short times, it means that you can merge back safely from his point of view, even if you're not 100m ahead. In that case, it's nice to thank him using the left-right-left-right blinker signal. Note that high beams would normally be used IRL, but cannot be seen for now in the MP game.

When being overtaken

- Stay in line
- If you're riding at 90 km/h, it is nice to slow down a little so the other driver has a chance to overtake you.
- When there's enough distance between you and the overtaker (60m should be enough), turn your lights on (or honk 2 short times if it's night time and your lights are already turned on) to signal that he can merge back safely.

But always keep in mind that if you do cause an accident you could be subject to bans or kicks.

Try to keep in mind that overtaking is not allowed in Europoort. Also make sure you don't overtake in small corners to avoid crashes with oncoming traffic.

I'd just have some common sense when overtaking, I see so many people blindly overtaking, no matter the situation.

My advise would be, do your overtaking like you would do in real life, and take into account you're in a truck (unless you're in a car of course);

- Don't overtake in right curves (left curves in the UK)

- Don't overtake in left curves (right curves in the UK) that have your vision ahead blocked by buildings, trees etc.

- Don't overtake in front of hills/inclines, as they will slow you down and make your overtake last very long, and you can't see traffic coming from the other side of the hill

- Don't overtake over a solid white line, SCS did a pretty good job putting them in the right places where overtaking is dangerous by default.

- Don't overtake at railroad crossings.

- Check your route finder before overtaking, if there's a crossing, trafficlights, fuel/reststop up ahead. For all you know the traffic in front of you might stop for rest/fuel, or take a different route then you are taking, and there's no need to take the risk.

- Only overtake if you can see ahead far enough, and then still take into consideration that some oncoming traffic in MP might come at you at rediculous speeds.

- Take into account the MP / sync specific points that Cyrusj quoted earlier in this topic

- if you do find yourself coming straight at opposing traffic during an overtake, have the decency to steer into the soft shoulder (if you can of course), and do it right away and plenty on time so it's clear to the opposing traffic that they can stay in their own lane without hitting you. If you can't, try to stick to the middle of the road, if you have the room, so oncoming traffic has enough room to pass you on the outside. Of course, if you've just started the overtake and someones coming, abort your overtake instead of trying to complete it.

- If you you're overtaking and find yourself in a situation where a frontal collision is unavoidable, slam your brakes in an effort to keep damage to a minimum (this goes for both trucks), and be aware you might still get reported/banned despite your efforts.

To add to what other users have already said, I recommend to turn on your left blinker (or right blinker in GB) while overtaking. In real life, this is common practice in some countries to show vehicles in the distance that you're overtaking and not unaware driving on the wrong side of the road.
