Suggestion Name: Make nicknames independent from Steam
Suggestion Description: The ingame nickname need not have any relation to the Steam one and therefore should be set separately (either on ets2mp.com or when launching the game), not copied from Steam.

Why should it be added?: It is customary in online games to select nicknames suitable to those games and possibly very different from Steam name. They are seen by different people (game community members vs. your friends on Steam). It would be a better user experience to enter the name in the game along with email and password. Note that people are allowed to use any nicknames anyway just with an extra hassle of changing them through Steam.

Luckily, the game doesn't use the Steam profile name as a nickname. It takes the Steam nickname that you can change as often as you like. So it could just as well ask for a name at startup.

The steam profile name is better due to the fact that people can change their names if they join a new VTC or if they need to play with friends and want to have similar nicknames. Also, they are able to write streaming or recording in their user if they wished and are able to change back with a few clicks.

That's what you get by introducing more/sloppy terminology. What was wrong with the "nickname"? What's "profile name"?

Sorry, I am dutch, sorry for misunderstanding.

Yes, a lot of people are daily joining an VTC, they can change their name in a few cliks, like CrazyforIphone mentioned :)

I wonder if you look both ways when you cross my mind..

Be slow to critize, be fast to appreciate.

So it can be changed without quitting the game? Didn't know that. Well, then a new chat command could be added

/nick MyShinyNewName

The point is coupling this nickname to Steam serves no purpose and is just an artifact of very early versions that didn't have any UI to ask for the nickname. Now there is the login screen. Let my Steam nickname be what it is. :)

The reason they are keeping it is for easier management with bans and reports. When someone ets reported they get the username and they can follow the username of the truck to watch what they do. Also in forum threads like report topics it is easier for them just to look up the name of the offender than have to try and figure out who is who. For now it is easier for the mod to remain with steam names.

See, the nickname is not a username. It doesn't identify you. It's been pointed out in this very topic that it can be changed very easily. That's why they ask for the steam id when it matters.

The solution to the reporting and reputation problem is to display some kind of permanent ID aka license plate.

Nicknames are not the best because the way it is coded now i think it only pulls your name once per session. If they implemented that and people changed their nickname alot it could use up alot of bandwith on the server.

Now you're just making stuff up.

I agree that it should not use your steam nickname, there should be a permanantly generated primary key (ala forums, anyone with DB experience will know what I am referring to) for each user that's registerered and never changes (unlike the current id system that changes when you leave/rejoin). I would love to put my trucking company name in my nick name, but then it will carry over into my steam conversations and confuse people, and source engine games (that why they have the steam groups, so you can have whatever name you want and append your steam group as either a prefix or suffix, depending on the game).

I would love make it dynamic. I have hated the steam integration ever since steam implented that the steam name is the ingame name.

Its not impossible to do, because as said; it works on the steam ID, NOT the steam username.

I think you're really not getting it. If someone records someone else being a general ass on the server, and their name is quite shown - let's go with.. SOMEGUYWITHNAME[RUS] -- the admin can search for that name on Steam, get his Steam Community link and get the ID out of it - and thus, ban him. If the admin sees GUYNAME[RUS]WITHSOME as his name, and thus search for it.. how would the admin know who it is if all he has is video evidence with a in-game set nickname, not the actual Steam Username?

The game SHOULD use Steam's Username as the name shown in game.

Well.. Several players can be called the same steam nickname. What you can do is to choose a nickname when you register and that nickname will be linked to your steam ID. The nickname can't be changed unless, for example, you buy a namechange token. That way you ensure that everybody has a unique nickname attached to their steam ID.

This isn't guaranteed to work. And could take a lot of time. I suggest a better way here: http://forum.ets2mp.com/index.php?/topic/1351-introduce-player-call-signs/ -- actually use the new account system.

Once again, the Steam "username" is not a username, it can be changed freely and AFAIK Steam doesn't store an unlimited history of changes.

REJECTED, will not be implemented, the steam ID is linked with your ETS2mp account, changing it would cause a lot of hassle for us admins who have enough on our plates every second of the game from receiving 30 reports per second
