Questions about Scania trucks

the grills, the front bumpers, the interior and some minor changes on the sideskirt and spoiler i think... thats how you can differentiate the look.

 

also theres a Scania streamline which came with slightly different headlights compared to the 6 series and without that "sidespoiler"...

i would recommend you to download the scania RJL mod in the steam workshop it will give you a closer look

It's just generations of Scania Trucks models (product range).

"Series" 1 to 4 were old Scania model ranges, series 1 was produced from 1968 to 1981, series 2 (originally known as GPRT range) from 1980 to 1989, series 3 from 1987 to 1998 and series 4 from 1995 to 2007. 

These old series were both conventional (bonneted) and cab-overs. Series 1 to 3 were know for really square and angular shapes of their cabs, series 4 had much more rounded and curved shapes.

 

In 2004, Scania introduced next generation, then known as PRT range, later PGRT, which remains the current production line, but today is reffered to as LPGRS range, sometimes also reffered to as Scania's new truck range.

This entire model range is modular, offering wide range of different configurations for any specific application. The PRT/LPGRS are types of cabins, P is low cab, R is high cab, T is bonneted (discontinued in 2005), G is medium between P and R, L (low antry) and S (flat floor) cabs were only itroduced with 2nd generation. 

1st generation was produced from 2004 to 2017 with PGRT cabs, the initial version of this is sometimes reffered to as the series 5. The R-series received a major upgrade in 2009, later passed on to G and P series, with new grilles, interiors, updated automatic gearboxes and other imrovements and this is supposedly reffered to as series 6. Later in 2013, R and G series received another upgrade, the Streamline package aimed mostly for fuel economy. There were also different engines available throughout the production, started with Euro III and Euro IV, first Euro V engines were available since 2005 and Euro VI since 2011. The most powerful 730V8 engine was introduced in 2010.

2nd generation, mostly reffered to as Next Generation Scania launched in 2016 and is manufactured to present day, introduces completely new R and S cabins, later in 2017 G, P and L cabs and also new XT range for all cabs, which is a heavy duty adaptation aimed for construction and forrestry. 

 

Series 5 and 6 are technically not real or correct names, they were never designated as such, after series 4 they simply switched name to PRT range, visual difference between series 5 and 6 series are different front grille and different cab interiors, difference between series 5 and series 4 are about as much as difference between 1st and 2nd generation of PRT range, they are different trucks with different cabins, not mere facelifts.

This is similar when many people are reffering to 2011 Mercedes-Benz New Actros as MP4 and its 2018 update as MP5. While the original Actros went through MP1 to MP3 generations, where MP2 and MP3 were just facelifts, the 2011 Actros is completely new truck with zero shared components with its predecessor (initial PRT range shared about 65% components with 4 series, but had a compeltely new cabin), so they just named it New Actros to cut any connections but everyody just went to call it MP4 and later MP5 after 2018 facelift.

This 4,5,6 refers to which series. 

 

The 4 series was produced in Europe from 1995 to 2004. It has 9,11,12,14,16 liter engines. shown in the model name with a number constructed by the cylinder volume in litres followed by the generation of truck this way a 14-litre engine in the 4-series will be a 144.  The letter, following the number describes the chassis type, but in the 4-series this code changed compared to former series (L, D, C and G in 4-series vs M, H and E on the 3 series). The 3-digit number on the opposite corner in the front stands for horse power. This ranges from 220 to 580 hp. Sample; 164L 480 V8 thats mean 16 liter engine 4 serie and 480hp v8.

 

The 5 and 6 series is a model with different body types with the codes r1, r2 and r3, produced from 2004 to 2016. With the 5 serie, engines in euro 4 euro 5, with streamline euro 6 norms were produced. Scania's maximum engine power in the 4 series was 580, in the 5 & 6 series it was 730. Between 5 and 6 the grill and bumper changes are almost identical. Scania has also emphasized aerodynamics in the streamline model and changed the deflectors. Between the 4 and 5,6 series there are huge differences in exterior design, interior design and engine. Scania even released special models like Silver Griffin in their streamline models.

 

Scania produces the S & R series from 2016 to the present day.

5 and 6 series are just user fabricated names for 1st generation of PRT range launched in 2004, it was never actually designated as that by manufacturer. The supposed 6 series is just a facelift for so called 5 series, why isn't streamline ever reffered to as 7 series or New Generation as 8 series?
