WE HAVE ALL BEEN THERE!
Driving with a couple of friends, one behind the other....
… THEN SUDDENLY!
You slam into the back of your friend, because you were following too close.
The question is, "What would be a safe distance away from my buddies while still following them?"
It is very simple, a quick rule of thumb
When you are following somebody in a convoy or pull up behind someone,
pick a landmark next to the vehicle in front of you. Then, count how many seconds it takes for your vehicle
to reach that same landmark.
Generally:
-You allow 1 second for every 10 feet (Or 3 meters) of your vehicle's total length.
For Example:
If your truck is 60 feet, (or 18 meters)…
Then your following distance (Time between vehicles) should be a minimum of 6 seconds.
WAIT! THERE IS MORE!
IF you are travelling over 40Mph (or 64Kph) you would add an extra 1 second.
In the same example provided above, and travelling over 40mph or 64Kph the follow distance should be no less than 7 seconds.
((This system will allow for rubber-banding and avoidance if necessary))
Typically, large commercial vehicles have suspension and brakes designed to work the most effectively when fully loaded.
In reality, a fully loaded truck will stop in a shorter distance than a truck that is running empty (or bobtail)
